About the Photographer

Chantal Thorlakson is a professional photographer with a unique style of night photography. Powerful images often capture "the decisive moment," Chantal's long exposure photography however, shows the illumination of the landscape and the passage of time.

The appearance of the landscape is never the same twice. Daylight alters what we see, but moonlight alters what we feel. Chantal's photographs express the experience of being outdoors in nature at night. Through the creative use of the camera, dramatic light, and Photoshop, Chantal communicates her inner artistic vision, love of the outdoors, and passion for the night.

Many of these lowlight photographs are landscapes lit with moonlight, or compositions created with "painting with light." When a photographer "paints with light"...the darkness is the canvas and the light is the paint. Many of the colourful effects in the photographs have been created by applying coloured light to the subject with a large flashlight. While she photographs city and people too, Chantal's latest theme has been photographing the Rocky Mountains at night.

Chantal is from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and currently resides in Sherwood Park, Alberta with her husband and two children. Her business Night Stock Photo markets night photographs for advertising and editorial purposes. These photographs are for sale as digital files for publication, or can be purchased as large art prints or gallery canvases.

Chantal is also an experienced photography instructor. She taught at Metro Continuing Education for five years, and is now running courses and workshops through her business. Chantal is also an active member of Professional Photographers of Canada, and has been awarded the Craftsman of Photographic Arts. Through PPOC, she has accreditations in Pictorial/Scenic, Nature, Stock, and Night Photography.

In 2010, Chantal was awarded seven Bronze Awards through the International Aperture Awards. She has also won awards with the Canadian Association for Photographic Arts, and the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival. Articles on night photography have been published in the Canadian Camera Magazine, and Outdoor Photography Canada, and PhotoEd Magazine.
